Reorganize

Generally, we produce the writing by a template, either an inner, unconscious template or an outer, explicit template. The template is usually designed to make sure that we, as writers, cover everything we should, but it is not necessarily the order of the reader's interest.

To reorganize--which is to reconsider most powerfully for the reader's needs--you might follow any one of, or all of, these guidelines:

  • Outline your draft now that you know all that you have to say.
  • Check your beginning sentence to see that it spills the beans.
  • Check your ending sentence to make sure that it details next steps.
  • Check your ending sentence to make sure that it is emphatic.
  • If you are trying to persuade, make sure that you have used time as your persuader.
  • Especially in writing that is more essay-style, check paragraphs for conclusive topic sentences.
  • If you are dealing with a difficult tone problem, use a careful, logical organization.
