13.1.12 Ellipses

Ellipses marks (" . . . ") have only one use in formal writing, to indicate an omission of words in quoted material, as shown below:

"The parties shall not . . . abridge these rights . . . in any way."

To use the ellipses marks continually and haphazardly looks as if the writer was halting or forgetful.
