13.1.4 Commas to Enclose

  1. Use a pair of commas or a comma and a period to enclose certain elements. When enclosing, do not put down one mark and forget the other.
  2. Use a pair of commas or a comma and a period to enclose these:
      1. Titles such as "M.D.,'' "PhD,'' or Jr.''
      2. Names of states
      3. Years in dates
      4. Words of direct address
      5. Inserted sentence elements
      6. Parenthetical elements
      7. Appositives
      8. Nonidentifying (nonrestrictive) elements
