Reorganize

Generally, we produce the writing by a template, either an inner, unconscious template or an outer, explicit template. The template is usually designed to make sure that we, as writers, cover everything we should, but it is not necessarily the order of the reader's interest.

To reorganize--which is to reconsider most powerfully for the reader's needs--you might follow any one of, or all of, these guidelines:

  • Outline your draft now that you know all that you have to say.
  • Check paragraphs for conclusive topic sentences.
  • Check data tables and bullets to see that you have introduced them with a powerful conclusive statement.
  • Check your beginning sentence of each section to see that it spills the beans.
  • Examine each section to make sure that it answers the implied question of that section and that it answers the question at the top of a paragraph.
  • Check your ending sentence to make sure that it is emphatic.
