11.3 Reduce general-action verbs

These verbs of vague action are sometimes useful for getting some action into a noun, but usually they are to be avoided.

The most common general-action verbs in engineering or high-technology writing are make, do, give, provide, conduct, perform, accomplish, and occur.
General: This module would provide the user with the ability to . . .
Forceful: This module will enable the user to . . .

General: This code performs data verification . . .
Forceful: This code verifies data . . .

In the writing of finance, the most common general-action verbs are these: exhibit, show, experience, post, report, realize, enjoy, suffer, and see.

General: The company saw a rise in sales.
    Forceful: The company's sales rose.
