6.2 Say what is, not what isn't

This may be the most important general rule of tone; speak positively. One banker might say "We cannot further discuss your loan until you plan to increase your output," while another might say, "As soon as you plan to increase your output, we'd gladly discuss this loan further." It's just a matter of how you look at it. Be wary of overusing 'not'; such an overuse is a simple clue to negative tone. Define the world as it is, not as it is not.
