13.3.2 Make sure that they points to a stated plural noun

A "user," or any other stated individual, is a singular entity. Do not refer to "a user" or "a person" as a "they." If you find yourself with a string of "he or she" phrases, try the plural for all. For example, "Users will be able to enter their data." Or simply avoid the pronoun as in, "The user will be able to enter the data."
